There is an amazing sense of achievement and satisfaction when you start seeing the results of the program, which is further enhanced when you see that those results are sustainable with simple lifestyle changes that you have identified and made.
Being overweight or obese can increase your risk of developing chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, cancer and certain mental health disorders – but it can also directly influence how you see yourself and in some cases it leads to severe anxiety and depression.
Human interactions within our modern built environment influence the lifestyle behaviours and attitudes of entire populations. That nearly 70% of men are overweight and 30% obese in the developed world is just one result of this interaction Let's call it for what it is – being overweight is not your fault.
You are hounded by internal messages from your brain and hormonal system to consume large amounts of sweet and calorie-rich foods while at the same time reduce your physical activity. Then there's a never-ending source of external pressures coming from the society around you. There is a huge availability within our modern environment to push consumption of the very things your body is telling you that you need (even if you know that they are not necessarily healthy) and at the same time selling you products and ideas to do away with the physical activity you apparently no longer need.
While it can be argued that becoming overweight and unhealthy is not the sole responsibility of the individual but a largely uncontrolled response to our environment, it is still up to the individual to make a change in order to lose weight and become healthy.
Science research shows that the most effective way we know to change behaviour is as easy as ABC:
Act – Belong – Commit.
- Act = Decide to change and want to do ‘something’ about it.
- Belong = Join and belong to a program or a group that is doing ‘something’ about it.
- Commit = Use that program to help you to stick with it until you have done ‘something’ about it.
This approach is something that is clearly emphasised in these programs.
